Along with his plays and poetry, Uruguay’s Horacio Quiroga (1878 – 1937) penned short stories set in the Uruguayan jungle along the banks of the Upper Parana River. The author incorporates elements of magic and the fantastic to portray the struggle to survive for both humans and animals. In many of his tales, animals take on human characteristics, including speech, that serve as metaphor for how humans, as an integral part of the jungle ecosystem, deal with nature, making choices to either explo..more

These animal stories are highly imaginative. Alligators working together to stop boats from coming up the river; a grateful tortoise carrying a sick man out of the jungle and into civilization; sting rays at war with 'tigres'; a lazy bee in a viper's den; a party with alligators, frogs, fish, and flamingos. Some of the stories, such as one about a raccoon who becomes the pet a of a farmer's family, have sadness in them. All of the stories are good. Quiroga's love of the jungle and all its creatu..more

Recommends it for: Spanish speakers: beginner or intermediate
Lately I have been reading all books in Spanish, and for that reason, I have not been updating GoodReads at all. However, this book is juvenile enough but still a good read for people like me who are trying to become more accustomed to the Spanish language.
Quiroga basically tells the stories of animals in the jungle who can speak to each other, including man. I enjoyed it.
Some of my friends grew up with Kipling and the jungle books.. I grew up with Quiroga and Cuentos de la Selva. Beautiful and fun stories. Sadly, there doesn't seem to be any English translations out there, but also wonderfully, because I think some things get lost in translation - no matter how good the translator. Practice your Spanish. Read these short stories.
I loved this book so much that I am working on self publishing my English translation of it. Help me raise money to bring this incredible book to English readers across the globe! : www.kickstarter.com/projects/19685448..

I read this book way back when I was young and loved it to bits. It tells funky stories of animals and their meetings with other animals and men.
I love re-reading it now and again.

Jungle Tales is a collection of eight short Tales, by Uruguayan writer and naturalist Horacio Quiroga. These tales develops the imagination of literature for kids and teenagers and introduce them to new cultures over the world. Horacio, in these Tales, illustrates the magic of the jungle, which is the place of great adventures.
It's nice that until now, children in elementary schools across all Latin America read this book as a part of their curriculum.

I discovered Horacio Quiroga with two of his best-known stories, the hen with the throat cut and the feather pillow. Since then I was delighted with his way of narrating and that essence that permeate his writings, in stories of the jungle is reflected all the above, even if it is a book for a children's audience.
17/26. Little different from the European fables I heard as a child, this collection also brings to mind Kipling’s Jungle Book. We get answers to why the flamingos stand in the water with their red legs and so forth, but more importantly, we get the joy of getting to know the South American animal kingdom.

Charming short stories written somewhat in the style of Aesop’s fables, with animal protagonists, and moralistic or didactic messages. Obviously aimed at a younger audience, but I still enjoyed it as a free audiobook from Librivox.

English person learning Spanish and just got a bit bored of having to look words up a lot. But, the stories (which I read) were actually pretty enjoyable

I found most of these stories a bit strange. The only one I really liked was the one with the flamingos. I actually feel quite uncomfortable about all the other ones: the tiger appears as a monster in each of the stories, while other animals, wild at the beginning, turn out to be the happiest pets in the world. Not really the kind of stories that children should read in my opinion (but of course, I am a biologist - which mght influence my point of view).
From another point of view, I read this bo..more
Les recomiendo este libro a estudiantes de espanol. Las cuentos son breves y los encuentró beneficiosos para practicar. Tambien los cuentos son muy interestantes.
For intermediate language learners this book is a gold mine. The stories are brief, but packed with excellent grammar and vocab practice. I read each story through once without a dictionary and then re- read the story to understand every single sentence. By noting the new vocab on the last blank page before the next story there is a han..more
It's a solid book for the intermediate Spanish reader. It's a collection of short (fantasy) stories for children documenting the relationship between men and animals all in the setting of the jungle. But for the individual who is aiming to improve their Spanish it's great because the stories are short and simple enough to easily grasp while providing new vocabulary. There are also colloquial phrases that will further introduce the reader to an experience that is different from rote classroom ins..more

There were snakes and jaguars and alligators and many other jungle animals in these tales. There was also violence. It's a world of survival out there in the jungle - that's for sure!
Oh, and I thought this was interesting - there were no women in these stories and every man smoked a cigar. Didn't see that in a Perrault fairy tale - Love the cover art and illustrations of this book - bold bright colors - like the jungle and it's animals.
I don't know why, but I was completely wrong thinking that those tales were boring. I think I read this book once, and I didn't like.. the cover. Then I had the feeling that all the tales were boring (I know, I'm weird) But reading this book again, I noticed was wrong. For sure these stories were written for children, but even though, I enjoyed them.

Maybe you'll like this book, I didn't like it very much. Why? Because I read it when I was a very small child, the language was not bad, but it was a tedious book. I would think it's better to read it when you're a teenager.
However, this book teaches a little about nature, flora and fauna in a different way. Maybe you identify a snake or flamingos.
You will get amazed the same author of tragic tales can deliver such an entertaining book for kids! They will certainly love it (as I did). Missed the Anaconda tales which were included on another edition I read on my teen years

The only sweet book of this writer, you can feel his mood changing. I really like how he develops the animals personalities. 'The Giant Turtle' and 'The Flamingo's Socks' are my favorite stories. Lost of humor, smart stories and innocent bittersweet plots. I really enjoyed reading it.
Great stories by a great uruguayan writer. A must read for spanish-speaking young kids in particular, and recommended for everyone as well.
My version is one by Ediciones De La Plaza, with a foreword by Ángel María Luna.
99.9% of the time I love the books my wife recommends. This one turned out to be a book of stories written for children about the goings-on of anthropomorphic animal characters in the rainforest. I read it anyway. In her defense she thought it was another one of his works.

Horacio Silvestre Quiroga Forteza was an Uruguayan playwright, poet, and (above all) short story writer.
He wrote stories which, in their jungle settings, use the supernatural and the bizarre to show the struggle of man and animal to survive. He also excelled in portraying mental illness and hallucinatory states. His influence can be seen in the Latin American magic realism of Gabriel García Márque..more Comments are closed.
